While we never think of Acura as a pioneering brand by any means, the MDX can be thought of as one of the first premium crossover utility vehicles. Though this seven-seater may act like a true SUV with its ability to two up to 5000 pounds, it is a crossover that is meant to provide luxury in adventure for larger families.

A Brief History of the Acura MDX

Though Acura had been apart of the SUV game since 1995 with their introduction of the SLX, the MDX was meant to provide families with a more luxurious experience, while still allowing them the space and power of an SUV-style vehicle. In 2001, the very first MDX hit the market with a seven-seater cabin and all-wheel-drive.

Three-Row Luxury – Technology and Features of the Acura MDX

The 2020 Acura MDX features a V-6 engine that outputs 290 horsepower. It has a smooth nine-speed transmission that is quick and seamless. It comes with an optional Super Handling all-wheel-drive system as well.

On the inside, passengers get a bench seat in the second row that slides back. There is plenty of cargo space for longer trips. The Acura infotainment system is very similar to the Honda system.

The Evolution of the Acura MDX

  • First Generation Acura MDX (2001-2006)

The first-generation MDX was fitted with a 3.5L SOHC V-6 engine that was capable of delivering 240 horsepower with its five-speed automatic transmission. It also featured an automatic all-wheel-drive system as well. In 2004, the MDX scrapped the dual tail-pipe configuration and added new taillights and headlights.

  • Second Generation Acura MDX (2007-2013)

The second-generation MDX came with a 3.7L VTEC V-6 engine that could put out 300 horsepower. By 2010, the SUV received a few exterior upgrades, including a Power Plenum grille, as well as a six-speed SportShift automatic transmission.

  • Third Generation Acura MDX (2014-Present)

By the third generation, the Acura MDX was built on an entirely different platform. Over 55% of the materials in the model were made to be more lightweight. In 2016, it received another facelift to feature LED fog lights, SiriusXM Radio 2.0, and a more sharply sculpted hood.

The Acura MDX In the News

In recent and unfortunate Acura news, a St. Louis man was badly hurt in a two-vehicle crash on I-55. A 2005 Acura MDX hydroplaned into the back of a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado that had also hydroplaned minutes before.

Celebrity Endorsements of the Acura MDX

It comes as no surprise that Chris Hemsworth owns an Acura MDX, as the brand spent an incredible amount of money sponsoring his latest film, Thor
