The Range Rover Sport can be traced back to the Range Stormer concept car, which was introduced at the North American International Auto Show back in 2004. This unusually sporty vehicle was the first of its kind in the Range Rover lineup. It wasn’t until 2005 that the Range Rover Sport production model hit the market.
Technology and Performance of the Land Rover Range Rover Sport
The 2019 Land Rover Range Rover Sport utilizes a few different engines, including a turbocharged 3.0L diesel V-6 engine that is able to output 254 horsepower with a 0-60 time of 7.6 seconds. There are also two inline-six engines, which can crank out 355 and 395 horsepower. Lastly, there is an inline-six that is paired with a 48-volt hybrid system. Each comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive.
The Range Rover Sport comes with a power-adjustable steering column, leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, and ambient interior lighting. Higher-trim models come with a fixed-glass panoramic sunroof, Windsor leather seats, and an 11-speaker audio system. Of course, Land Rover also provides their InControl Touch Pro Duo infotainment system.
Two Generations of the Land Rover Range Rover Sport
- First Generation Land Rover Range Rover Sport (2005-2013)
The first-generation Range Rover Sport was the second most powerful Land Rover in history at the time, utilizing a supercharged 4.2 AJ V-8 engine that was able to put out 410 horsepower. By 2009, Range Rover sport received a facelift with a more aerodynamic front end and a few new engines.
- Second Generation Land Rover Range Rover Sport (2014-Present)
By 2014, the Range Rover Sport was upgraded with a longer wheelbase for more interior space, a floating roof, bolder wheel arches, side fender vents, and a state-of-the-art aluminum monocoque platform. It was fitted with a full-time intelligent four-wheel-drive system as well. By 2017, the Sport received new headlights and a redesigned grille.
